Since Poland have, demanding that they receive votes in the EU for those killed by the Nazis during the Second World War. The Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said:
"We are only demanding that we get back what was taken from us...Yet if the Second World War had not happenned, Poland would not exist in the form that it does today, considering the massive change in geography and population that happened in the Peace Treaties after the end of the war. Of course, Mr Kaczynski is ignoring that problem to his claim. But you can't help but admire him for saying it.
If Poland had not had to live through the years of 1939-45, Poland would be today looking at the demographics of a country of 66 million."
Along with Britain and the Netherlands, Poland is part of the "awkward squad". Long may we all remain awkward for the EU!
Whenever I'm told not to mention the war, I can barely contain an urge to imitate Basil Fawlty...
